Thermory thermally modified timber (TMT) cladding, produced with spruce.

Thermory Thermowood aspen acoustic wall cladding. The sapwood is very light and uniform with a subtle grain. The sample at the bottom of the image is thermally modified (TMT). Heating the wood to 180-230 degC alters the colour of the wood, whilst improving resistance to decay and insect attack.

Thermory Thermowood aspen wall cladding. Thermally modified timber (TMT) has been heated to 180-230 degC in a controlled atmosphere. This process reduces the moisture content to around 5% and in doing so permanently alters the wood's chemistry by cooking off the sugars (hemicellulose). This results in a much more durable timber, resistant to decay and insect attack, and lower thermal transfer.

Trælasthuset (The Timber House) is a parking garage in Nordhavn, Copenhagen, by Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter, completed 2002. The cladding consists of laminated glass, recycled aluminium and Thermwood pine.

Cross section through a wood fibre insulated wall, using various products from Steico, with thermally modified timber (TMT) pine cladding. This setup removes the need for toxic ingredients and contributes to improved indoor air quality.
